Season 2 Preview - The Challenge: Free Agents (First Trailer)

Today has been a very emotional day for me. I wake up to see that Sbarro, the most classic of mall pizza, is declaring bankruptcy. Then I go to find out that my favorite couple of all time, Amy and Matt Roloff of Little People Big World are getting a divorce. I mean the writing was on the wall but, shit, that's heartbreaking. Hope the pumpkin farm will continue to be what it is now. But you know what, none of this matters because I'm in heaven right now. You may be curious why, the the reason is clear: the newest season of The Challenge has been announced. I could not be happier. These are a bunch of random thoughts based off the one trailer that came out today on Buzzfeed .

When the cast was first announced it looked like this was going to be the Ruins 2, challengers versus champs but boy was I shocked to see it called "Free Agents." Essentially, they are done with teams, it's every lone solider for himself or herself. This means CT can continue to be Tom Brady, not Dan Marino. This means Preston will probably be kicked off way sooner instead of floundering until the middle of the season. Here's how the game works. The whole cast will participate in a challenge, the winner of that challenge will then pick one of the losers to go into a duel, inferno, gulag, type setting. Then, at random, another competitor will be chosen to go in. Loser of this duel, inferno, gulag will be sent home.

Couple things I noticed in the trailer to keep in mind. The challenges themselves looked like some may have groups or teams involved which I'm assuming will be narrowed down to one winner at the end. It looks like the random selection ceremony is done moments before duel, inferno, gulag and you won't know if you're until right before. This changes everything. In the challenges of past, this would let Nany cry for a full 24 hours before the challenge, now she has to try to sneak that in before competing immediately.

I could not be happier about this. I'm sick of Johnny Bananas trying to weasel his way out of competing all the time, now he has to in order to guarantee his safety. This is one of the first challenges in a long time where you can't rely on politics alone, you need to actually be good at challenges too. The script has been flipped and there is no way this could go poorly. CT sums it up best in his quote in the trailer:

"I've always been a free agent and now everyone is going to have to play my game." - CT

Males:
  • CT - Paris
  • Johnny Bananas - Key West
  • Isaac - Sydney
  • Cohutta - Sydney
  • Chet - Brooklyn
  • Brandon - Fresh Meat 2
  • Preston - New Orleans
  • Dustin - Vegas
  • Leroy - Vegas
  • Zach - San Diego
  • Frank - San Diego
  • Swift - St. Thomas
  • Johnny - Portland
  • Jordan - Portland
  • Females:
  • Aneesa - Chicago
  • Devyn - Brooklyn
  • Emilee - Cancun
  • Jasmine - Cancun
  • Jonna - Cancun
  • Camila - Spring Break
  • Laurel - Fresh Meat 2
  • Cara Maria - Fresh Meat 2
  • Theresa - Fresh Meat 2
  • Jemmye - New Orleans
  • Nany - Vegas
  • LaToya - St. Thomas
  • Nia - Portland
  • Jessica - Portland
  • This is the list that Buzzfeed published of the competitors which matches lists that have been out since January. Definitely an interesting mix of characters. Good to see CT is back will a full beard this season, ready to continue his reign. Only real surprise on this list for the males is Swift who was a fairly forgettable member of the St. Thomas season. Fairly certain when the season ended he just stayed in St. Thomas. Sure he just needs the money. Johnny from Portland is making his challenge debut. Curious to see how he will react to Nia being there seeing as they have a troubled past (IE she tried to throw a lamp at him).

Much more surprises come in the form of the women on the cast. Devyn from Brooklyn, famous for being more concerned with her appearance than anything else is now going to be competing solo. Fat chance she makes it far. Hurricane Nia will be making her challenge debut and I can only assume bringing along a ton of crazy. Guess the whole fucking NBA players for money thing didn't quite work out. LaToya from St. Thomas, who fought constantly with Swift during her season, is making a rare challenge appearance. Based off her inability to swim during the training for her job at the aquarium, I have to assume she will be trash competing.

The trailer is only a minute long but I spent some serious time trying to piece together what I could. First and foremost, the challenges look to be interesting again. Recently they have been falling flat but shit, they had some new original ideas that looked good. That said, the opening of the trailer starts with the same challenge we have seen easily 900 times in various other forms on the show where they all run into a pit with tunnels.

There are a few hookups shown in the trailer. If you want to keep these as surprises, skip this paragraph. It looks like Johnny from Portland is either no longer dating Avery(and Daisy) as he is freely hooking up with what looks like Theresa. Other hook ups seen in the trailer are Laurel and Jordan and Nany hooking up with everyone: Dustin, Cohutta, and definitely not least Aneesa. The trailer is completely devoid of any physical fights.

The newest season of The Challenge looks exhilarating but I am curious if it will get the same treatment other MTV shows have been getting lately. Will the continue to break down the 4th wall like they are currently doing on Real World: Explosion? As with every challenge, there are lots of questions to ask and until April 10th, none of them will be answered. I haven't been this excited for a challenge in a long time, I just hope it lives up to expectations.
